Are you thinking of hosting a movie night for the women at your church?
Women’s ministry movie nights are a great event to host any time of year.
- Set up an outdoor movie screen in the summer or fall
- Play a movie one evening during your women’s ministry retreat
- Gather during the winter for a night of fun and laughter
How to Host a Ladies Movie Night
- Determine your location – make sure there are plenty of comfy chairs to accommodate everyone. If you’re a smaller church you may be able to host a movie in someone’s home. Consider showing a movie on the big screens in your sanctuary or worship center if you can for a full theater-like experience.
- Set a date and time – Check the church calendar and select a date and time for your movie. Keep in mind some movies will run over 2 hours, so don’t schedule your start time too late!
- Select a movie and preview it first. (See the suggestions below.) Secure permission to share the movie. Please see the licensing information below.
- Advertise your event.
- Purchase snacks – consider creating a popcorn bar, candy station, and soda fountain. Be sure to include some healthy and allergy-friendly options too.
Important Licensing Information
You must have a license to show the movie to a group, even if you are showing it in someone’s home. Please check with your church office to find out if they have a CVLI and if it covers the movie you’d like to show (it may not). You may be able to get the licensing fee waived if you contact the motion picture company.
Content Considerations
Not all of these movies on this list are “Christian” movies. Some are produced by people of other faiths.
You may find it helpful to read a review on PluggedIn. As described on their website, Plugged In is a Focus on the Family publication designed to shine a light on the world of popular entertainment while giving families the essential tools they need to understand, navigate, and impact the culture in which they live. Through our reviews, articles, and discussions, we hope to spark intellectual thought, spiritual growth, and a desire to follow the command of Colossians 2:8: “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.”
Please consider giving your women a description of the movie if it may contain triggering content such as abortion, human trafficking, sexual content, or abuse.
You may find it helpful to include a time of discussion after the movie to highlight the content that did and did not align with God’s Word.
